Opening Night Audience Reviews May 23, 2012:
"This play would put meaning back into Broadway." “I see a lot of theatre. This is one of the best shows I’ve seen.” "This is better than most of the shows on Broadway!" "Incredible! The actors put their heart and soul into the play." "This is an important play about Black History." Excerpt NYTheatre 2006 One of those rare shows that is important enough and powerful enough to warrant strong support and a large audience… Much of this play’s power comes from its revelation of the true face and danger of racism, often hidden behind carefully crafted personal facades or strategically controlled government positions. This play is an incredibly worthy piece of theatre. |

My husband and I attended a performance of Conversation with a Kleagle at the 13th Street playhouse a couple of weeks ago and have been marveling ever since about the brilliance of this play. What we found especially amazing was how the role of the Kleagle unfolded and how the parallel was made between how the protagonist had to cope with the loss of his dignity when he fled for his life after talking with the Kleagle and how the Kleagle had to lose his self respect when he had to surrender his desire for revenge and [to him] his dignity for financial well being. I wanted to let Mr Gray know how much we enjoyed the play with all of its ramifications and its humanity.

At the heart of Conversation With a Kleagle is a terrifying journey. It's not the physical journey that the lead character, John Watson, makes in Rudy Gray's new play, but rather the emotional and psychological one that leads him into the mind and emotions of a major figure of the Ku Klux Klan. Half the journey is exhilarating, half is trying, but all of it's worthwhile.
Excerpt Backstage 2009
A vivid glimpse of the ubiquitous Ku Klux Klan's lynching culture in the Deep South during the Coolidge administration.

A riveting and memorable profile in courage... it tells a story important to our collective history and character.
